STEVE CHAN

As a child ,Steve had a rocky time at school. He realized early that his talents lie in designs and movies. His passion eventually led him to a diploma in Advertising Design from the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, where he was mentored by famous music video directors. After graduation, Steve attended the Academy of Film at Hong Kong Baptist University, where he majored in Films and Media Arts in 2009, furthering his training in scriptwriting and directing.

In an early interview with Hong Kong Baptist University, Steve recalled his first childhood dream. “I wanted to be an inventor,” he recalls. “Although I don’t come up with new inventions now, I invent aspiration for others with my productions.’

Steve’s 2016 debut production Weeds on Fire was a success at film festivals, earning wards and critical acclaim internationally.
In 2013, the film’s original script had won the First Feature Film Initiative Competition of Creative Hong Kong, which earned
Steve a HK$2 million grant from the Film Development Fund to produce his first feature-length film. In 2016, Steve was nominated for Best New Director and Best Film at the 36th Hong Kong Film Awards. The film received another six nominations, and
the film’s main actor Mr Wu Tsz Tung Tony won the Best New Actor award. The film also won in the 11th Hong Kong Film Directors Guild Awards and 23rd Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award. It also received nominations from the 53rd Golden Horse
Awards, 11th Asian Film Awards and 17th Chinese Film Media Awards.

From 2016 to 2019, Steve directed and/or produced a host of television shows, including 3 x 1, My Very Short Marriage, Limited Education and the variety show Living Without… My Domestic Helper for ViuTV, Hong Kong. Limited Education won Publicly-voted Best Drama and Publicly-voted Best Scriptwriting in the Audience in our Community Television Awards 2019.

As an Advertising Design graduate, Steve has often returned to his roots. Over the years, Steve has directed multiple advertising videos, including: Discover Hong Kong – Sham Shui Po for the Hong Kong Tourism Board, PRULife for Prudential (UK), Ultimune for Shiseido, Today’s Will for HSBC, Be With You at Every Mile for Mitsubishi Electric and AI Make Your Dream, Build Your Future for China Construction Bank (Asia). Today’s will for HSBC received over one million clicks within one week, and Discover Hong Kong – Sham Shui Po won multiple awards at the 2018 HK4As Kam Fan Awards.
