Brandon believes the creative process is a paradox: first, you think outside the box for an idea, then you must express that idea within the limitations of the screen or page. Yet, despite this contradiction, the journey continues to be a fulfilling one for him.
Brandon began his career in advertising in 1998. As a designer, he honed his aesthetic vision by working for global brands. During this time, he learned the discipline and craft that is required to beautifully express an idea within the bounds of a static 2D image.
While he loved designing well-crafted ads, he craved to see his ideas leap off the page. So in 2005, he joined the creative team for one of Hong Kong’s most respected electronics retailers. There, he focussed his creativity on display marketing, store layouts and integrated campaigns. His work helped the company win multiple awards, including recognition by the prestigious Hong Kong Quality Brand Association.
Yet, Brandon yearned for new creative challenges. So in 2012, he set his sights on video production. At first, it was quite a departure from what he was used to. Unlike a static image, a video allows expression through movement and dialogue. Yet even this freedom comes with constraints: the sets, the costumes, the lighting, the performers and the crew had to work in harmony towards a single vision. But it’s a challenge that Brandon continues to embrace every day at Playground.
As the Project Director, Brandon overseas video production for a host of local and multinational brands—and winning acclaim along the way. Recently, he and his team have won multiple awards for their work on a thematic campaign for CCBA, including a Best Idea Award at the MARKies and 3 Fintech Awards.
While Brandon is always thrilled to win awards, he feels that the most important part of the work is to sharing in the joys of creative cooperation with his team and his clients. Because for Brandon, the creative process is also about pushing against the boxes and boundaries that surround ourselves in order to expand our horizons.
